American vs Chinese mahjong: what’s the difference?

Both games share the same roots, but American mahjong and Chinese mahjong are played with different tiles, rules and scoring. The biggest practical difference for a buyer is the tile count.

Tile count: 166 vs 144

A standard American set has 166 tiles, including eight jokers and flower tiles that American scoring depends on. A traditional Chinese set has 144 tiles and no jokers. That 22-tile gap is why an American set cannot simply be substituted with a Chinese one.

The NMJL card

American play follows the annual National Mah Jongg League card, which defines each year’s legal hands. Chinese mahjong uses fixed, region-based scoring with no yearly card. If you are playing in a US club, the card — and therefore an American set — is what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Chinese set for American mahjong?

Not directly. A 144-tile Chinese set lacks the eight jokers American hands require, and its scoring differs. For NMJL play you need a 166-tile American set.

Do both styles use the same tiles otherwise?

The three numbered suits, winds and dragons are conceptually the same, but artwork, tile size and honour styling differ between regions. American sets add jokers and flowers on top.

Which should a US beginner buy?

If you are learning through a US club or class, buy an American 166-tile set and the current NMJL card. Chinese-style sets are for a different game.
